Homeownership is many people’s dream, but that doesn’t mean that it’s always smooth sailing. Whether you’re dealing with noisy neighbors or a stinky in-unit dishwasher, it’s okay to air complaints about your humble abode. But when it comes to American homeowners, what bugs them the most about their homes?
To find out, the home service platform HomeAdvisor surveyed 1,029 homeowners — 50% of whom were millennials — to find out what they most loved and hated about their spaces.

Unsurprisingly, one of owners’ key complaints was size. In fact, 1 in 3 respondents said their home was too small. Many respondents also disliked specific parts of their homes, mainly functional spaces like bathrooms (23%), laundry rooms (21%), basements (14%), and garages (10%).
While most homeowners dislike these rooms because of their size (48%), there are other reasons why homeowners might avoid these particular rooms: poor layout (27%), dated design (24%), a sense of discomfort (20%), and the fact that the room might not be furnished to their liking (20%).
Other common home complaints included distance from friends and family (11%), their neighborhood (10%), and lack of affordability (7%).
But fear not! The average American homeowner still finds plenty to love about their home. Overall, their home’s location was more of a positive than a negative factor for respondents, with 59% reporting that they like their neighborhoods. In fact, three of the top five most-liked aspects of respondents’ homes had to do with location. Respondents also praised their homes’ proximity to a city (45%) and proximity to friends or family (35%).
Unsurprisingly, when it comes to all the rooms in the house, Americans love their living rooms the most, with 43% of homeowners reporting it’s their favorite room and 54% saying it’s the room they spend the most time in. Coming in second place are bedrooms, with 21% of respondents calling it their favorite room in the house.
